The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp |
Every summer at The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, over 1,000 children become athletes and actors, painters and poets, swimmers and singers, clowns and canoe-paddlers, naturalists, equestrians and hot air balloonists. It is amazing what these campers accomplish in one week; just as amazing are the obstacles they overcome on a daily basis, for these children suffer from serious illnesses such as cancer, sickle cell anemia, HIV/AIDS, and hemophilia. The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp offers nine week-long summer sessions: four general (oncology) sessions, two sickle cell anemia sessions, two immunology sessions and a Brother/Sister session for the siblings of children with serious illness.
Wounded self-esteems are often a by-product of serious illness. The children who attend Camp know only too well how different they are from other children. Through guided adventures, skills development, artistic expression and raw enthusiasm, Camp engages youngsters at all levels, allowing them to grow beyond their perceived limits, enhance their self-esteem, and build the inner qualities that will sustain them through the daily challenge of serious illness. All of this occurs under 24-hour medical supervision provided by paid and volunteer physicians and nurses.
The Hole in
the Wall Gang Camp also provides year-round programs for over 3,500 campers
and their families through retreats and reunions at Camp, and home and
hospital visits. For hospitalized children with life-threatening illnesses,
the Camp's Hospital Outreach program takes "Camp-in-a-Suitcase"
programs to
Campers and their families, counselors, doctors, nurses, and a host of volunteers come together to help make The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp a place characterized by creativity, playfulness, trust, hope, and unadulterated fun. As one camper put it, "Great things happen here!"
